Org-Mode: Your Life in Plain Text

Org-mode is for keeping notes, maintaining ToDo lists, doing project planning, and authoring with a fast and effective plain-text system, and it’s FREE.

Org-mode is an add-on for the popular free EMACS editor (programmers editor) and adds a full outline and todo list. All the files are stored in standard txt (ASCII) format so can be edited by any software if required. If you have a dropbox account you can store your outlines on your dropbox account and edit them using any editor or use the EMACS add-on to see the proper outlining.

The author suggests that this wonderful outline tool can be used for GTD, planning, notebooks and web/pdf authoring. There is also extensive documentation. There are some good tutorials covering introduction and power users guides with a useful screencast overview (25 minutes).

The beauty of this product is that it is very extensible and can be adapted by power users to do just about anything that requires outlining and maintaining lists. The files can be published to HTML and XHTML plus other formats such as LaTeX and Gantt Charts for project management integration. There’s a very interesting tech talk from GOOGLE that discusses Org-mode (46 minutes) and well worth listening to.

Leo Laporte’s Podcast network has recently published a podcast that discusses and talks to the author (Carsten Dominik) about org-mode – well worth a listen (as are all the FLOSS podcasts)

Extreme Programming (XP) is a method or approach to software engineering and the most popular of several agile software development methodologies.

It was formulated by Kent Beck, Ward Cunningham, and Ron Jeffries. Kent Beck wrote the first book on the topic, Extreme programming explained: Embrace change, published in 1999. The second edition of the book, which appeared in 2005, delves more into the philosophy of eXtreme Programming and describes it as being:

a mechanism for social change

a style of development

a path to improvement

an attempt to reconcile humanity and productivity

a software development discipline

The Office Update page of the Microsoft Web site offers a useful toolkit for analyzing databases prior to converting them to Access 2003 format. It is called the Access 2003 Conversion Toolkit, listed under the Add-ins link under the Access 2003 heading on the page.

Donn Edwards offers a utility called AccessOpener, which avoids those annoying messages when opening a database that is in a different Access format than the version of Access you are running. The utility works with Access 97, 2000 and XP/2002, and it can be downloaded from here.

Thinking about integrating Web Services? The PerfectXML website has some great articles about SOAP and MSXML and other technologies that will allow you to do this. I’m fairly new to the world of web services and not yet a proficient .net programmer (VB migration on the way…), but seems to me that Web Services are the thing of the near future.

This article from PerfectXML is a good allrounder that includes stuff on standard asp programming – easy to follow and very logical. I’m particulary interested in simple bits of code and interfaces (perhaps Google or eBay) that I can test using Access 2000 and VBA. I understand that it’s possible without over complicating everything. The recent Access user group meeting (May 2005, UK) was very interesting. Peter Vogel (editor of Smart Access, Pinnacle publication) gave a brilliant presentation of Microsoft Access using SOAP, etc. to access Web Services; so it must be possible.

Anyway below are some links to web sites (mostly Microsoft) that give you all the key downloads. You’ll have to provide the reading and sweat to make it work. I’m fascinated by the whole concept, so will be doing some testing over the next few weeks and keeping them posted on here.

PerfectXML.com :: Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP): “Chapter 7 Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)

The Simple Object Access Protocol is a standard that has provided a simple solution to a complex problem. The problem is that integrating systems is difficult. That’s not really news, but it is a fact that many I.T. professionals are well aware of. The main area of incompatibility arises because information and objects are distributed all over the place.

The SOAP standard provides a set of tags and an environment that allows systems to request information from other systems by sending self-describing messages over any network.

SOAP is really just an envelope, but its simplicity means that it is easy to use and very flexible. In this chapter, you will learn about this most important standard for web services.”

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer version 4.0 was the first Web browser to support XML. Since then XML support has been introduced in various Microsoft products, such as Office XP and SQL Server 2000. Microsoft re-assured its commitment by including extensive support for XML in the .NET framework.”

The Microsoft SOAP Toolkit is deprecated by the .NET Framework. The toolkit provides basic Web services capabilities for COM components and applications. Support for the SOAP Toolkit has been extended from the originally posted July 1, 2004 deadline. Mainstream SOAP Toolkit support will now be retired in March 31, 2005 with Extended Support lasting until March 31, 2008.
